Mission

The John Muir Health (JMH) Community Medicine & Global Health Fellowship aims to train Family Medicine physicians to increase health equity via enhanced local and global community partnership, health policy and physician leadership.

Description

The JMH Community Medicine & Global Health Fellowship is a non-ACGME 11 month fellowship (August 1st to June 30th) for graduates of a qualified Family Medicine Residency Program. The program will prepare its fellows to address the health disparities of under resourced populations through a clinical and educational curriculum encompassing community engagement, physician leadership, global health and teaching.

As a not-for-profit, community-based health system, we believe that it is our responsibility to help create healthy communities in the areas we serve. Our Fellows will provide care to patients at our Residency Clinic where 50% of patients have Medicaid insurance. We work collaboratively with our Integrated Behavioral Health team and Case Manager to provide holistic and equitable care to all patients in our clinic. We partner closely with John Muir Health’s Community Health Improvement Department to expand our clinical care and health education outreach to vulnerable populations in under resourced areas within Contra Costa County. We have strong partnerships with community organizations and clinics in the nearby cities of Richmond, Concord, Pittsburg, Antioch and Brentwood.

The Mobile Health Clinic Team, Kimberly Alvarez, Isis Morales, Maynor Guerra, Vidal Martinez, Saul Garcia & PGY3 Dr. Bre Tetreault.

The John Muir Health Family Medicine Residency Program has a global health partnership with a community clinic in Arequipa, Peru, in association with the Long Beach Memorial Family Medicine Residency. The Fellow will collaborate with local clinical teams to practice medicine in suburban Peru via clinic-based and home visit experiences. They may occasionally act as the precepting physician if a JMH or Long Beach Memorial Resident is also at the Peru site for a global health elective. The Fellow may lead didactic sessions for residents during the academic year, including a “grand rounds” presentation of their global health experience upon return to the residency program.

Sponsorship

This Fellowship was established through the vision and generosity of Karen and Tom Mulvaney. Like John Muir Health, Karen and Tom Mulvaney are dedicated to improving the health of the community with quality and compassion. “We want to give back. We’re both ‘doers,'” Karen explains. “And we both believe that schools, libraries and hospitals are the fundamental cornerstones of a community. Without those, what is a community?”

The Mulvaneys’ commitment to improving the health of the community, especially those that are traditionally underresourced and underserved led them to helping John Muir Health establish its first Community Medicine and Global Health Fellowship. Their intention is to help develop the next generation of community medicine physicians who are dedicated to delivering the highest quality health care equitably and compassionately for the most vulnerable populations in their communities.
