Clerkships

Participation in our fourth year clerkships provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the practice of family medicine at John Muir Health Family Medicine Residency Program. Each rotation consists of a four-week block during which you will work with experienced and enthusiastic physicians in the ambulatory or inpatient settings.

We offer three clerkships per block: two in our family medicine clinic and one inpatient clerkship at John Muir Medical Center in Concord.

"As a visiting medical student, I was impressed by how invested the John Muir Health faculty and residents     were in my education. From the first day, everyone made my learning a priority. The faculty used a variety of     strategies to help me improve my clinical skills. The residents encouraged my questions in the clinic and     welcomed me into their after-work social events. I feel so fortunate that I was able to be part of such a     vibrant and inclusive learning community."

Victoria T. Charoonratana, MS-4 Darthmouth University

"Rotating at John Muir was an incredible experience. The staff, faculty and residents went above and beyond     when it came to facilitating my learning and making me feel welcome. Every day in clinic was a gift and this     rotation was certainly the highlight of my fourth year."

Omeed Atefi, MS-4 Touro University                                                                                                                        Current PGY3

We offer two exceptional clerkship experiences:

Team Based Care

This four-week ambulatory clerkship allows medical clerks to become full members of our inter-professional team. Clerks will see a panel of patients, make pre-visit and post-visit assessments, consult and provide collaborative care with other members of the team, as well as participate in faculty-lead workshops. Our Family Medicine Residency Practice uses “The 10 Building Blocks of High Performance Primary Care” to frame the medical student’s experience, and provides clerkship mentors and coaches to ensure a positive and valuable educational experience.

"I had the best time during my Team Based Care clerkship. I immediately felt the warm, cohesive     relationship between the residents, faculty, MA’s, nurses and other administrators, which made such a     difference in creating an efficient, well-run clinic. I truly felt like part of the team and my clinical skills     improved so much because of the caring support of the faculty and residents as well as the diverse patient     population."

                                                                                                                Kimberly Hower, MS-4 Touro University

"My clerkship experience at John Muir was memorable in so many ways! I really enjoyed working with the     close-knit and supportive resident team, as well as with the attending physicians and program director who     were so welcoming and eager to teach. The rotation also offered a diversity of experiences, including     volunteering at their mobile clinic and mentoring college students in the community who are interested in a     career in medicine. When it comes to medical training, I feel that I got the best of both worlds at John     Muir    —    a sense of community involvement and exposure to excellent medical care. Thank you to the     entire John Muir team for an amazing experience!"

Chaudy Sotoudeh, MS-4 AT Still University

Inpatient and Transitional Care Medicine Clerkship

This four-week clerkship focuses on inpatient and transitional care management of hospitalized patients. Students will act as the primary caretaker of their patients following them from admission through their hospitalization as well as an emphasis on the discharge process. The rotation will occur at John Muir Medical Center, Concord campus. Students will see patients at our Post-Discharge Clinic as well as round on patients that have been discharged to skilled nursing facilities. The clerkship is taught and supervised by highly experienced internal medicine and family medicine faculty. Students will be given ample opportunity to manage acute care conditions in a supportive and highly effective hospital system.

"My inpatient experience was great. There was a lot of independence which gave me the opportunity to     interact with different teams and specialists in the hospital. I liked the ability to see the patient on my own,     present the patient to the attending and get feedback on my plan. You get a diverse patient population to     learn from. Everyone is eager to teach and there is a focus on the patient's whole health. There's a ton of     learning opportunities and you might find yourself learning without knowing it!"

                                                                                                                                                               Erica Yeo, 2020

"Loved my time rotating here!  I particularly appreciated the exposure I got to Integrative Medicine and     Behavioral Health.  All the residents and faculty were enthusiastic about teaching and would go out of their     way to make sure I was having a fulfilling learning experience.  Everyone I met--residents, faculty, medical     assistants, nurses, administrative staff-- were all incredibly warm, friendly, and ready to help.  Thank you!"

                                                                                                                                                    Tracy Hu, UTMB
